Carol-Ann Belzil-Normand’s multidisciplinary practice, showcased in many exhibitions and public presentations over the past few years, unfolds across the fields of installations, video and sound art, often merging the three. Combining an array of techniques and media, even including holograms and smells, the artist creates multisensory spaces that elicit full-body responses. Going beyond the exploration of optical effects, her work exceeds the limits of visual arts into a form of global experience akin to synesthesia, a convergence of stimuli of various natures.

It is hard not to use a sense-related vocabulary to describe the work of Belzil-Normand ; I myself, paradoxically, find it is closely associated with touch. Indeed, whereas being in contact with materials seems self-evident for most artists, the distance that writing confers on the objects studied by authors usually predisposes them to focus on the sense of sight. Nevertheless, I find the impressions aroused in me by Belzil-Normand’s work are primarily haptic in nature : the soft downiness of her works on textiles (there suave-ness, to call back to a previous exhibition), the smooth coolness of her ceramics, but also the lightness and the warmth radiating from a soft, unconventional drawing illuminated on a screen. This free-association game I engaged in is very similar to how the artist, ever since the publication of Smell of Sound in 2014, combines terms that, although dichotomic, tend to resonate with our personal memories and sensory experiences. Cri de velours (velvet scream) is a new opus that contains in its title the promise of a richly dense world, as shimmering as it is rough, coarse and dissonant.

The sampling of the artist’s scream, modulated to various sound environments—at times ethereal, at times overpowering—is a recurring motif throughout her work. The vibrant voice in the foreground, either alone and continuous, or spatialized, fragmented and duplicated, creates an uninterrupted drone reminiscent of a heartbeat or other deep bodily noises that go unnoticed unless one stops to probe their inner selves. The ensemble produces a powerful effect, a sort of primitive manifestation of language, at once intimate, reassuring, violent and sensual. It is important to note that what we hear is a woman’s scream, in line with Belzil-Normand’s interest in the feminist body, liberated from the tyranny of beauty and embracing her humanity (either through representations of sexuality free from the male gaze, or normalizing depictions of bodily fluids and functions). The scream embodies a plural feminine identity, neither enraged nor submissive. In the lineage of the rather radical performances that artists like Yoko Ono or Marina Abramović have been engaged in since the 1970s, Belzil-Normand proposes a very delicate and nuanced appropriation of a potentially subversive act. The result is an enveloping piece that leads us to once again feel such sensations as the hardness of metal, the wetness of raindrops, the warmth of a breath or exclamation ; this, along with a many other associations that build into endlessly renewed layers with each listening experience.
